“Synnovation Lab” Empowers Personalized Learning through Flexibility and Innovation
When there’s a steady flow of educators visiting a school to learn about a specific program that’s flourishing there, you know there’s something special going on. That’s exactly the case with the Synnovation Lab at Sycamore High School outside of Cincinnati. This personalized learning environment was designed specifically to facilitate project-based learning, allowing students to anchor their studies in topics that naturally intrigue and motivate them.
Working with Sycamore Community Schools, SHP designed the Synnovation Lab to be a truly unique space for individualized learning. In the lab, multiple teachers of various subjects are available to coach students as they progress through individually guided lessons in a space that offers a complete toolkit for learning. At any moment, students and teachers have their choice of personal or group space, technology for collaboration or solo work, and a variety of unique spaces for seating or movement.
Our work on the Synnovation Lab was featured in a School Construction News article, Personalized Learning Meets Start-Up Mentality in the Synnovation Lab, which outlines the bold thinking and “failing forward” mentality behind this incredibly personalized learning space.
An instant hit among teachers and students alike, the open and flexible space gives teachers more freedom to focus on specific content—even specific students—in ways that wouldn’t be possible in a more traditional classroom setting. For their part, students feel more empowered to own their education, work at their own pace, and implement personal interests into their studies.
