Client: Western Brown Local Schools
Location: Mt. Orab, Ohio
  • A 6,000sf renovation of the Western Brown High School media center.
  • New media center, spirit shop, media workroom, and production lab.
  • Spirit/coffee shop is operated and managed by students.
  • Additional informal space was added adjacent to the spirit shop for use in between classes or before/after school.
INTERESTING FACT: SHP originally designed the Western Brown Media Center under a more traditional model, consisting of tall book stacks and one central circulation desk. This renovated space incorporates modern technology, flexible areas that can be reconfigured, and an overall more communal & open floorplan. These various spaces can be used throughout the school day for teaching, meetings, and large group gatherings.

Building on the more than 20-year relationship with Western Brown Local Schools, the goal of the renovation was to create a series of flexible spaces centered on the themes of research, creation, collaboration, and sales. The commons area encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration and supports the school’s DECA program. Additionally, the seating configurations are designed to accommodate various group sizes, ensuring that students can effortlessly transition from individual study to group collaboration.

"Seeing Western Brown's media center come back to life was truly exciting. This was designed with the student's needs in mind while also allowing plenty of flexibility. There are plenty of opportunities for the students to gather and collaborate in the bright, welcoming space".
