Milford Middle School
Client: Milford Exempted Village Schools
Location: Milford, Ohio
  • Grade level communities are separated by floor, each with classrooms, areas for collaborative learning, an art room, and project labs. Four extended learning areas on each floor provide breakout space for group work on hands-on projects.
  • Dedicated STEM, STEAM, and robotics spaces, including a flexible alternative learning suite that supports equity and diverse learning needs.
  • A lofted media center overlooks the large student dining commons (designed as the social and academic heart of the building), reinforcing visual connection and shared ownership of space.
  • Two courtyards prioritize outdoor access for students to enjoy while increasing natural light in the building, and give key consideration to building security.
  • An athletics wing houses a 1,000-seat main gymnasium, a 140-seat auxiliary gymnasium, and locker rooms.
Streamlining Connectivity and Flow: Site planning was crucial for considering the full secondary campus context, carefully aligning the middle school, high school, and athletic facilities to improve bus circulation and drop-off traffic flow.

Seeking to move 6th graders out of elementary schools and create capacity for preschool programming, a new middle school was required to replace an existing junior high at Milford Schools. SHP partnered with the district through master planning and community engagement to design a three-story, $65M middle school that balances functional needs with long-term adaptability. The building organizes students into smaller learning communities that support connection, equity, and growth.
