Building Opportunity in Appalachian Ohio
Overcoming the community-wide scarcity mindset begins with visionary leadership. And when you pair forward-thinking, strategic leaders with the funding to address a community’s most pressing needs, the results are transformative.
Just look to Appalachian Ohio, where a wave of investment is reimagining what role a school can play in the community.
Through the Appalachian Community Innovation Centers Program, school districts in southeastern Ohio are creating full-service facilities that unite public education, health services, and career development under one roof. Funded by the OFCC, these centers cultivate ecosystems where students’ strengths intersect with industry demand and community needs—turning schools into vibrant hubs of opportunity and well-being.
The SHP team has been fortunate enough to work alongside several of the districts that were selected for this groundbreaking initiative, including projects at Bridgeport, New Lexington, Chesapeake Union and Fayetteville-Perry. As experts in educational facility design, we’ve seen firsthand how the built environment can shape a community’s future. These projects have only deepened our understanding of how schools can fill critical gaps and serve as catalysts for resilience and adaptability.
Our world has become increasingly complex, and the challenges ahead—labor shortages, healthcare deserts, evolving workforce demands—require bold, integrated solutions. We believe the Appalachian Community Innovation Centers are an ideal way to address these challenges. Beyond traditional education, these facilities will play a vital role in reskilling adults, expanding access to necessary services, and building sustainable pathways for growth.
This model proves that when design supports both learning and living, entire communities thrive. And while this particular program is rooted in Appalachia, we believe it has the potential to serve as a blueprint for stronger, more connected, and more resilient communities around the country.
