Employee Spotlight: Aaron Buirley, Senior Project Architect

Inclusive, Positive, Honest, Conscientious, Loyal.

Simplicity and elegance. Those are the goals of architect Aaron Buirley for almost all his projects. He aims for straightforward designs because he believes that a project can have a pleasing aesthetic without being unnecessarily complex or complicated.

As a senior project architect, Aaron is responsible for overall project design, project coordination, technical reviews along with product and building code research. Typically, there are multiple projects in progress in design and construction so there is often quite a bit of jumping back and forth between projects, which can be a challenge at times, but is also very rewarding to Aaron.

“I love my job because solving the puzzle always gives me great satisfaction, and that’s what I get to do for all of my projects. That doesn't mean there is only one right answer but working through all the options with a client to come up with the best solution is a process I love.”

Aaron has been with SHP for over 20 years, and in his time has led some of SHP’s most memorable projects. His favorite is Vandalia-Butler High School because it was a complex addition/renovation project where the client was willing to stretch the project design to help create something new and exciting.

Another momentous occasion in Aaron’s career was the completion of Artspace, due to it being a different project type than SHP typically does. It was a multi-unit housing project that fully renovated and restored a historic building in downtown Hamilton, Ohio. This project was memorable for many reasons, but most notably that the project team won a Cincinnati Design Award for their great work.

“I hope I can look back in 30 years and see that all the projects I’ve worked on are still standing and continue to make a positive contribution to the communities they exist in,” said Aaron. “I will see it as a great accomplishment to have been a part of so many great teams that created great places for people to experience for a long time.”

In his free time, Aaron enjoys being outside in the community. Whether that is with his family on a hike in a local park or on a beach far away or sitting in a beer garden with friends, being outside is one of his favorite pastimes. He also loves watching movies, specifically horror and Sci-Fi films.

“I hope I can look back in 30 years and see that all the projects I've worked on are still standing and continue to make a positive contribution to the communities they exist in.”
