Employee Spotlight: Michael Shoup, Technical Director

Michael Shoup’s journey at SHP began as a graduate co-op in 2004. Now as SHP’s Technical Director, Michael manages and participates in the firm’s technical production. This includes the maintenance of production standards for drawings and specifications, reviewing and improving digital delivery processes and workflows, and collaborating with project teams. In his work, Michael always strives to bring practical and elegant solutions to design challenges through the application of building science and construction knowledge.

He is eager to build upon the firm’s strong technical foundation and guide its standards, processes, and technical solutions through ever-evolving technologies in digital delivery and building systems. “There’s always something new to be learned, and I never assume I know where, or from whom, I might acquire valuable knowledge. Collaboration with colleagues, clients, and other industry partners is paramount to growth.”

During his career, Michael has had the opportunity to work on a variety of project types and finds the most fulfillment in the profound impact a project can have on a community. That can range from community pride in a renovated neighborhood asset, or simply the pure elation of a young boy realizing that his new school has a slide.

When his career is finally said and done, Michael hopes he looks back and sees buildings that positively impact the lives of all who experience them. Within the profession, he wants to know that he passed on his technical knowledge and dedication to as many young and aspiring architects and designers as possible.

On any given weekend, you can find Michael and his wife in search of fun experiences for their daughters. He is also a natural tinkerer, so he also spends his  “me” time doing anything from home improvement projects to building custom guitars (and even sometimes playing them) to working on an IKEA hack, and just about anything in between.
